Shingeki No Kyojin 4 & 5 – He is back

Eren and his gang concludes his training in the academy – they graduate , ending up at the top 10 and having the privilege to choose which unit they wanted to go in.
Desiring to be at the forefront of titan slaying, Eren unhesitatingly joins the Recon corps — Armin and Mikasa follow suit without hesitation.
Shortly after graduation, they are on break during their duty on the walls of Rose when the Colossal titan appeared once more, causing another hole in the wall and destroying the wall’s armaments.
Easily annihilating the unit on the walls, Eren recovers and attempts to take on the titan – only to find him vanish as swiftly as he appeared.
The guards regroup and recover from their casualties swiftly as they incoming hordes of Titans will approach the city’s center anytime soon.
Mikasa is assigned to the rear elite guard while Eren, Armin and the rest are assigned to the frontlines. Eren recalls vital information to taking down a titan and hopes he succeeds in this endeavor.
As soon as they arrive at the outskirts, a couple of abnormal titans appear and easily kills Thomas Wagner and the other members, effectively crippling the unit.
Eren comes to the rescue of his squadmates, but ends up becoming another meal for the titans.
Armin watches on as he becomes the sole survivor the unit, with an unprecedented sense of guilt and fear overwhelming him.

By now, i think we can safely conclude that Production I.G is one of the best animation studios out there.
Shingeki No Kyojin has kept its visual style and production values consistent so far – leaving viewers craving for more as each week passes.
The Action sequences involving the 3D maneuver gear in episodes 4 and 5 are just exemplary in match-moving and tracking [ terms in visual effects ], though sometimes i feel their speed and relation to the environment is largely off upon scrutiny.
These couple episodes build up another engaging arc in the attack , but has been pretty much random in terms of execution. The colossal titan comes and goes as he pleases and only leaves a menial hole in the wall so that other titans can come in [when he admittedly can destroy the whole structure with a little bit more effort ].
More character development as we see the finer shades of behavior in each character, though they are admittedly overly dramatic sometimes, but hey, it’s humanity’s last bastion and I would know how you would feel [ maybe i don’t ].
Though the main character dying 5 episodes into the series has definitely been a new twist in storytelling and assuming you haven’t been spoiled by the incredibly considerate people who have read the manga, you’d be dying to know what’s next for Eren.
Shingeki No Kyojin EP 3 – Rebuilding mankind

Eren and gang start their military training at the ripe age of 16. They go through grueling processes to strengthen themselves in order to effectively face the giants [Eoten].
Sasha Braus joins the fray of main characters, with her introduction being particularly full of potatoes.
Eren has everything but the physical ability to balance himself in preparation for the crucial Multiaxial gear that every scouting legion member will have to don. Slightly disheartened, he goes around looking for advice to better himself.
In the process he discovers that many people joined the military only for social status – and makes a few new comrades.
On the day of his final trial, he discovers that his saddle was defective all along, and he managed to balance himself for a moment before falling face-straight into the ground.
And so our group are ready for their arduous journey against the Eoten.

With the inclusion of none other than ‘Potato Girl’ Sasha Braus, we have Shingeki go on a slightly more relaxed pace – a nice break from all that gore in the first two episodes.
Though for the sake of the narrative, the hilarity of Potato Girl was slightly out of place due to how spontaneous her appearance is – eating potatoes in broad daylight on the parade square. It is a love-hate thing, given how tongue-in-cheek eating potatoes during military training is. I don’t blame you though, Sasha, you’ve definitely made an impression on all of us we will expect more [potato] action from you in the future.
We see that Eren is becoming more and more of a likeable main character as he has displayed traits of a honorable warrior – setting pride and ego aside to do what he has to do. yes, for all we care, he could have gone down that typical ‘egotistical-badass-wannabe’ path and become an archetypal maniac who just wants to kill. Good that he didn’t.
That said, this episode was really entertaining and concluded Eren’s military journey concisely.
Bring on the dazzling multiaxial action!

Shingeki No Kyojin EP 2 – Mankind is still falling
After the destruction of wall Maria, the populace of the city flee into the inner two walls and face famine and food shortage problems as a result of the titan attack.
Eren is still very much distraught over the death of his mother, and how the defenders of the city acted during the Titans’ attack.
The siege of the city somehow stopped and the refugees of the Maria wall reclaimed Maria, albeit suffering heavy casualty. They also cultivated the fields at outer walls once again to improve the living conditions of the people.
Yearning to take revenge on the colossal beasts, Eren , along with his two other friends enlist for the army.

Kept the summary as simple as possible because that’s all that happened and I’ve more to say over here.
There are gaping plot holes within the story — why did the titans stop attacking after they have decimated the walls so easily ? Moreover, where did that gargantuan Titan from the first episode go to ? He couldn’t have just ‘gone home’ after being summoned by some lightning, right ? It was as if they left these crucial points out in the screenplay and just assumed many things.
Not everyone normally read the manga or source material, so animation screenplay must be coherent for all viewers to enjoy. That is all I’m saying. Let us hope they clear these things up in the future episodes, because at the current progression, it’s honestly quite haphazard and half-filled.
Though, the character development can turn out to be quite interesting. as i foresee Eren going down multiple archetypal paths:
1) He becomes a mighty warrior who lusts for merely revenge on the Titans
2) He gains some rationality and ponders why the titans are actually attacking ( plot twist imminent?)
3) Everyone dies
Whatever happens, it’s going to be packed with warriors flying around with jet-packs and whizzing from rooftop to rooftop [ in real-time 3d environments !] — and of course, gore !

Remember a while ago I said that anime was failing and heading towards its own demise ?
Of course i was joking, we all feel that way sometimes with the way things go in life – not just anime, but any form of medium for that matter.

About a year ago, I saw the promo trailer for this animation and was quite stunned at the production value and thought it would just be a multiple-cour movie like Kara No Kyoukai, but here we have a 2-cour anime with astounding quality right off the bat.
The plot is fairly straightforward for a first episode: people live a peaceful life, town gets attacked by a logic-defying entity and the story gets going.
Eren is a boy living behind the monolithic walls of the last bastion of mankind, and he has no greater wish than to join the Recon corps – a band of warriors venturing warriors who gather information on giants – to be able to explore the outside world freely. His ideals are constantly questioned by the people around him, much to his unbreakable will.
One day, a great lightning struck outside the city walls and there appeared a gargantuan giant of flesh and blood that instantly demolished the city wall, creating an opening for other titans to wreak havoc inside the city. Eren witnessed his mother becoming a meal to a giant and that concluded the first part of the fall.

First of all, this anime looks pretty damn good.
And that’s an important aspect of hooking your viewers right from the promo.
The animation is fluid, and the art is stylized, giving that medieval-era feel where characters have moderately thick outlines and detailed facial expressions. They even included a lot of fancy 3D set pieces to bring the environment to life. I could describe the animation style in the two words, they’re probably mature and fleshed-out.
Perhaps it’s too early to tell about character development, but Eren can turn out to be the archetypal hero who vows revenge without giving his actions some though- i don’t know, but i’ll be looking forward to that. The rest of the cast look fairly interesting, as they oppose Eren’s viewpoint and it’ll be very interesting to see how their ideologies shift as they adapt to the situation. The origins and ecology of the Titans are also something that needs to be developed, as they will be crucial plot devices ( gory ones).
Looks like there will be something to look forward to this season, after all !
